Privacy & safety
How Can Eat It? handles your camera, your data, and its limits.
Camera
- The camera is used only to read barcodes, and only after you tap “Start camera”.
- Video is processed on your device. It is never recorded, stored or uploaded.
- The camera turns off as soon as a barcode is found, when you cancel, or when you leave the page.
Photos you upload
- Barcode photos are read in your browser and are not sent to any server.
- Temporary image data is released once processing finishes.
What is sent over the internet
- Only the barcode number is sent to our server, which looks it up in GS1 Sweden, Coop (when configured), Ditt Svenska Skafferi and Open Food Facts.
- Your preferences and allergies are never sent — the ingredient check runs on your device.
What is stored on this device
- Your preferences, your recent scans, and any ingredients you type in are saved in this browser's local storage.
- App pages and images are cached so the app opens quickly and works offline. The last 25 products you looked up are saved for 30 days, so you can still see them without a connection.
- There is no account. Clearing your browser data, or the button below, removes everything.
Sharing your preferences
- A share link contains your name and the allergies, diets and ingredients you selected — nothing else.
- That information sits after the “#” in the link, which browsers never send to a server. It goes only to the people you send the link to (and the messaging app you use). Your name is visible in the link so the preview can show “Can Alex eat it?”.
- People who open your link can save it on their device. To update it, send a new link; they can remove you at any time.
Safety
- Can Eat It? is an informational ingredient check. It cannot guarantee a product is safe to eat.
- Product data comes from external databases and may be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Recipes change.
- If you have a severe allergy, always verify the physical packaging and manufacturer information, and follow your doctor's advice.
- When information is missing or ambiguous we say so — an “Unable to confirm” result never means the product is safe.
Install as an app
On Android, choose “Install app” (or the browser menu → “Install app” / “Add to Home screen”). On iPhone or iPad, tap Share → “Add to Home Screen”. The installed app opens full-screen without the address bar and works offline for everything except product lookups.
